Description

The Park at North Station

The Park am Nordbahnhof is a 5.5 hectares public area, developed by Grün Berlin GmbH in 1995. The park was designed by Berlin-based landscape company Fugmann & Janotta. Due to insufficient funds, the construction of the park took till 2009 to complete.

The most striking feature of the Park am Nordbahnhof is its location three meters above the street level. Another special feature is the Stettiner Tunnel that connected the East Berlin Schwartzkopffstraße with the West Berlin Gartenstraße, which was closed in 1952 by the GDR authorities. There is an "archaeological window" that exposes a glimpse of the former walled underground border system. The Park am Nordbahnhof is in close proximity to the Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer, the Berlin Wall Memorial.
